Chiropractic Treatment for Whiplash at Dilliard Chiropractic P.C.
There's a good reason so many people think "whiplash" when they think about chiropractors. This agonizing form of neck injury may actually be multiple injuries rolled into one debilitating condition, and cervical vertebral misalignment is one of its classic manifestations. If you're suffering from a recent case of whiplash or even the nagging aftereffects of an old one, you'll be glad to know that non-surgical solutions are available. Here at Dilliard Chiropractic P.C., we can administer conservative treatments to restore neck comfort and function.
Whiplash's Causes, Damage and Symptoms
Whiplash is a set of injuries that occur when the neck is subjected two extreme actions called hyperextension (from the head flying backward) and hyperflexion (from the head flying forward). These two actions occur in the wink of an eye, creating the whip-like movement that gives the condition its name. While a variety of sports, home or work incidents can cause whiplash, the classic example is an automobile impact. Even when slow speeds are involved, a sudden stop can hurl the head forward and backward -- with the neck taking the brunt of the damage. This damage may include:
- Subluxation (mild dislocation) of the joints that connect and mobilize the cervical vertebrae
- Misalignment of the cervical vertebrae, possibly causing changes in the curve of the neck
- Strained tendons and muscles
- Ligament sprains
- Herniated cervical discs that pinch nerve roots
As you probably know all too well, these injuries can leave you with serious symptoms, and not just neck pain and stiffness. Whiplash can also cause headaches, migraines, shoulder or facial pain, nausea, dizziness, ringing in the ears, mood changes, memory loss, blurred vision and sleeplessness. Pinched nerve roots can also cause a variety of neurological side effects such as cervical radiculopathy (pain, numbness and other sensations in a hand or arm).
Our Chiropractor Offers Non-Surgical Whiplash Care
Our El Cajon chiropractor, Dr. James Dilliard, urges you to get your whiplash evaluated as soon as you can, because the injuries you've received may continue to get worse or form internal scar tissue. Our chiropractor can determine exactly which structures have been affected and administer immediate treatment to put you on the road to relief. Chiropractic adjustments to the cervical spine can reposition the vertebrae to normalize joint motion and alignment. Our massage therapy services can help your soft tissues feel better and repair themselves while also breaking up old scar tissue, while corrective exercises help you regain strength and range of motion. We also refer our patients for specific types of medical imaging or other specialized services as needed.
