Prenatal & Pediatric Care
Pregnancy can put an incredible amount of stress on your body. As many mothers know, the strains of pregnancy are very real and can be more than just a minor problem. The average weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds, combined with the increased stress placed on the body by the baby, could result in major discomfort. Studies have found that about half of all expectant mothers will develop low-back pain at some point during their pregnancies. This is especially true during the third trimester, when the baby's head presses down on the mothers back, legs, and buttocks, irritating her sciatic nerve. For those who already suffer from low-back pain, the problem can become much worse.
During pregnancy, a mother’s center of gravity almost immediately begins to shift forward to the front of her pelvis. Although a woman’s sacrum-or posterior section of the pelvis has enough depth to enable her to carry a baby, the displaced weight still increases the stress on her joints. As the baby grows in size, the woman's weight is projected even farther forward, and the curvature of her lower back is increased, placing extra stress on the spinal disks. In compensation, the normal curvature of the upper spine increases, as well.
What can you do to manage these complaints?
Studies have shown that regular chiropractic adjustments provide relief from the increased low-back pain brought on by pregnancy. Chiropractic manipulation is safe for the pregnant woman and her baby and is especially attractive to those who are trying to avoid medications in treating their back pain. Here at Dilliard Chiropractic we can also offer nutrition and exercise advice to help a new or seasoned mother enjoy a healthy pregnancy.
Postnatal Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care can also help after childbirth. For the mother, in the eight weeks following labor and delivery, the ligaments that loosened during pregnancy begin to tighten back up. Ideally, joint problems brought on during pregnancy from improper lifting or reaching should be treated before the ligaments return to their pre-pregnancy state-to prevent muscle tension, headaches, rib discomfort, and shoulder problems.
For the infant, labor and birth can be a very traumatic. Most birthing methods are very stressful for the baby and can cause other complications such as subluxations or misalignments of the spine. This can result in physical restrictions such as, problems nursing, abnormal sleep patterns, colic and complications with digestion.
How Pediatric Care Works
Chiropractic treatments for a child begin with an extensive examination to determine the exact issue and the best treatment route. Even if your child isn't old enough to communicate, or is shy, our chiropractors have the skills to work with them to find out precisely what is bothering them before proceeding with treatment.
Gentle and non-invasive adjustments made to the spine will help children become relaxed, and most children even fall asleep after their treatment is over. Our team at Dilliard Chiropractic P.C. has experience providing chiropractic care for children, and we understand that children's bodies are quite different compared to adults.
As a parent, you want to protect your child from pain and sickness, and with our chiropractic treatment, we'll be able to help correct underlying issues before they affect development. These adjustments provide support for a pain-free and positive childhood.
How can you correct these conditions?
chiropractors can evaluate your child for subluxations and set up a proper care plan to restore your baby’s health and function as much as possible.
